Chad Baker-Mazara, Tomas Chapero and Luke Martinez headline Capitanes’ first roster moves ahead of a new NBA G League campaign.
Capitanes is beginning to shape its roster for the 2026-27 NBA G League season, bringing together a combination of international talent, continuity and experience. The addition of Chad Baker-Mazara, the return of Tomas Chapero and the homecoming of Luke Martinez mark the first steps in a project focused on continued growth and competing at the highest level.
With distinct backgrounds and career paths, each player brings valuable qualities to the team’s development. Baker-Mazara arrives after a well-rounded NCAA career and taking his first steps as a professional in Puerto Rico, Chapero will continue his development following his first season with Capitanes, and Martínez will have another opportunity to represent Mexican basketball on the international stage.
Chad Baker-Mazara Brings Dominican Talent to Capitanes
Born in the Dominican Republic, Chad Baker-Mazara became the first player announced by Capitanes for the 2026-27 season when he was added to the team’s Training Camp roster. His arrival offers another opportunity to continue his professional growth in a league that serves as a pathway for players pursuing the highest levels of basketball.
Baker-Mazara brings extensive experience in U.S. college basketball, having played for Duquesne, San Diego State, Northwest Florida State College, Auburn and USC. In 2026, he took the next step in his career, making his professional debut with Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). He was selected first overall in the BSN Draft and emerged as one of the standout rookies of the 2026 class.
His journey reflects an ability to adapt to different competitive environments, while his Dominican and Latino roots align with one of Capitanes’ core values: elevating talent and inspiring the next generation of basketball players.
“Chad has built an impressive career, and we’re excited to support him in this next step. His experience in the NCAA and his recent start as a professional have helped him develop versatility, competitiveness and a strong feel for the game. These are all qualities that will be very valuable to what we’re building at Capitanes,” said Orlando Méndez, Capitanes General Manager.
Tomás Chapero Builds on His First Season with Capitanes
For Tomás Chapero, the 2026-27 season represents another opportunity to grow with Capitanes. The Argentine forward returns to the Training Camp roster after appearing in 36 regular-season games during the 2025-26 campaign, averaging 5.7 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist per game.
His contributions extended beyond the stat sheet, with his physical presence, defensive ability and versatility allowing him to make an impact in different game situations. Combined with his familiarity with the organization and the demands of the NBA G League, those qualities will be valuable as he enters his second chapter with the team.
Chapero’s connection with Capitanes began in 2025, when the organization acquired his rights in a trade with the Grand Rapids Gold. Before arriving in Mexico City, he also developed part of his career in Argentina’s Liga Nacional de Básquet with Obras.
“We’re very happy to welcome Tomas back to Capitanes! We built a very positive relationship throughout last season, and we’re excited to continue it. Tomas returns with a lot of ambition, and with the experience he gained during his first NBA G League season, we believe he can take advantage of that opportunity to keep developing and contributing to the team,” Mendez said.
With a season of experience in the league under his belt, Chapero will look to take another step forward in his development while continuing to contribute to Capitanes’ collective growth.
Luke Martinez Returns with Experience and Mexican Pride
Mexican talent will remain an important part of Capitanes’ plans with the return of Luke Martinez, who will once again wear the team’s colors after playing for the organization during the 2023-24 season. His addition brings experience and leadership to a roster that continues to take shape, while giving him another opportunity to represent Mexico on the international stage through the NBA G League.
Martinez is familiar with the organization, the demands of the competition and the passion of Mexico City’s fans. That experience will help him reconnect with the team as he pursues new goals in this stage of his career.
For Vitor Galvani, Capitanes Head Coach, having players who understand the demands of professional basketball and bring maturity to the group is an important part of building the team.
“When you’re building a roster, having players who understand the demands of professional basketball and can bring maturity to the group is essential to strengthening the team throughout the season. Luke brings his experience and will be an important piece of the structure we’re looking to build at Capitanes,” Galvani said.
Beyond his contributions on the court, Luke's return represents the continuation of his relationship with the organization and another opportunity for Mexican basketball to be represented on the international stage.
Capitanes’ Roster Begins to Take Shape
With Baker-Mazara, Chapero and Martínez, Capitanes is taking its first steps toward building its roster for the 2026-27 season. Youth, potential, international experience and continuity come together in these early moves as the organization continues working to assemble a group ready to take on the challenges of the NBA G League.
On-court preparations will begin on October 26, when players report for Training Camp and the team starts working toward the upcoming campaign.
With the new season approaching, Capitanes is beginning to bring the pieces together for a team determined to compete at the highest level and proudly represent Mexico City.
